Antique French Silver Large Cup with 3 Museum quality high-relief caved cameos, 1850s. This gorgeous antique large cup is made of silver. It has beautiful repousse shells, grapes and leaf design, and a charming handle of snakes.Best of all, it has three Museum Quality high-relief carved shell cameos in use of rare 2 layers, the carving is super elaborate, superbly rare 19th century cameos caved of God Hermes, Mars, and a Goddess that I can't distinguish according to her character. In ancient Roman religion and myth, Hermes is the god of trade, heraldry, merchants, commerce, roads, thieves, trickery, sports, travelers, and athletes in Ancient Greek religion and mythology; the son of Zeus and the Pleiad Maia. Mars was the god of war and also an agricultural guardian, a combination characteristic of early Rome. Use of the shell colors was not easy and only the most skilled carvers knew how to give the color in the exact points of the subject. The colors of the shell have been wonderfully used to create spot of colors on some chosen areas. It is hallmarked with the Minerva mark used in France for silver on the bottom of the cup. We would date this to the late 1850s Victorian era. A very desirable piece for any collector.
Measurements: 6.1 " (15.5 cm) to handle; 3.55" (9 cm) tall, 5" (12.8 cm) wide cameo size: 1.75" x 1.2 (4.5 x 3 cm). Thank you very much for visiting my shop Mirabeau & Rive-Gauche Antiques to see the hand painted porcelain items: Jardinière, vase, tray, charger..
