Rare French 18th Century Louis XV Vernis Martin Silver Pique Oval Snuff Box
FINE QUALITY RARE FRENCH 18TH CENTURY LOUIS XV. VERNIS MARTIN SILVER PIQUE MOUNTED faux TORTOISESHELL TOP OVAL SNUFF BOX. His is a very fine quality Beautiful Extremely Rare French Louis XV 18th century Vernis Martin Oval Snuff Box with Silver Pique inlaid faux TORTOISESHELL Hinged Top, i would estimate this rare snuff box dates to circa 1740 making it nearly 280 years old, the quality is stunning and the decoration is breath taking, the oval top has been crafted in a wonderful faux TORTOISESHELL with a central oval Tigers Eye stone mounted cartouche to the centre this is framed by the most beautiful and very delicate gilt engraved border which is also then framed with ornate circular and ornate Silver Pique Work, the silver pique work to the top is beautiful with delicate flowers and foliage, the silver flowers and foliage drape very beautifully to each side of the central oval tigers eye cartouche panel, its exquisitely, the body of this rare oval snuff box has been crafted in Vernis Martin, with deep and rich red colours, all this is framed with the most stunning gilt metal borders, i have never seen a snuff box as special as this one before, its stunning, the hinge to the back is a stand away hinge which is typical of the early 18th century, the scrolled ornate thumb piece is delicate yet so beautiful and shows its age with the wear, the quality of the craftsmanship is superb, this would have once belonged to a very wealthy 18th Century Gentleman and sat proudly on the table top ready to be used, this was many many years ago when times were so very different, if this snuff box could talk i can just imagine what fascinating stories it could tell, this snuff box is so very tactile and once held it has the most wonderful feel. This will add something very special to any collection, my photos dont do it justice. Martin Family, French lacquerware artists of the period of Louis XV. 1770are remembered for perfecting the composition and application of vernis Martin, a lacquer substitute named after them, patented by Guillaume and Robert in 1730. In 1748 their factory became part of the Royal Factory of Furnishings to the Crown.
Among their commissions were coaches and rooms at Versailles. Vernis Martin, lustrous lacquer substitute widely used in the 18th century to decorate furniture and such personal articles as brisé fans and snuffboxes. The process of adding bronze or gold powder to green varnish was perfected by the Martin family, hence its name vernis Martin (Martin varnish). Highly praised by Voltaire, it was developed to imitate East Asian lacquerware being imported into France during the Louis XV period. Vernis Martin was made in several colours, green and a golden red being the most characteristic.
