Published in Paris, France in 1829. Includes dozens of plates of astrological, ancient maps, and modern (to early 19th century) maps. Lapie engraved maps, each with plate marks and the Lapie embossed seal.
It is believed to be first edition. The book was made in 1829 but the plates were not completed until the early 1830s. The actual release of this book was likely in the early to mid 1830s.
Lapie was the premier French cartographer and geographer. He was probably the most prominent geographer in his time.
In good condition for its age. It appears complete with all of the maps. Maps are in great condition. The leather binding has separated and a few pages including the front cover are detached from the book. This can be repaired relatively inexpensively. Evidence of old glue fix.
Heavy grade, well made paper. This is a prominent book and likely intended for nobility or the clergy. It was likely far too expensive for the newly formed French middle class. This was also produced after the Napoleonic wars which gave France a tremendous source of pride. This atlas is just another example of Frances belief of European domination and wish to influence the world with their interpretations.
This was a form of education, enlightenment, and propaganda all in one expensive book! This book sits in some of the most prominent museums in the world. Very few are in tact and even fewer are in private collections. Many of these books were dismantled for the maps. All photos untouched and taken in natural, indirect light.
